Origin

The Maremma Sheepdog descends from Roman-era livestock-guardian mastiffs documented in 1st-century-AD agricultural writings: Marcus Terentius Varro's De Re Rustica (37 BCE) and Lucius Junius Moderatus Columella's De Re Rustica (60 CE) both describe the white shepherd's dog as ideal for guarding flocks because the white coat distinguished the dog from the wolf at night. The breed has been kept by Italian shepherds for at least 2,000 years to guard the transhumant sheep flocks of the Maremma (coastal Tuscany) and the Abruzzo highlands. The breed was formalized in 1958 by the Italian Kennel Club, which combined the previously-separately-registered Maremmano (Tuscan plains) and Abruzzese (Abruzzese highlands) types into a single breed under the Cane da Pastore Maremmano-Abruzzese name.

Recognition

the United Kennel Club followed in 2006, and the Federation Cynologique Internationale published the international standard (FCI No. 201) in 1956. The FCI assigns the breed to Group 1 — Sheepdogs and Cattledogs (Section 1: Sheepdogs).

Standard

The FCI and UKC standards describe a strongly-built, powerful and majestic dog of rustic appearance, both distinguished and well-proportioned. The defining feature is the long, abundant, harsh white double coat — slightly wavy, never curly, with a thick mane around the neck and shoulders. The only acceptable colour is pure white — small ivory, pale orange, or lemon shading on the ears is tolerated under the FCI standard but body colour other than white is disqualifying. Males stand 65-73 cm at the withers, females 60-68 cm.
