Origin

The Brazilian Longhair descends from the domestic cat population established in Brazil from the late 15th century, when Portuguese colonizers brought cats to control rodents. Over centuries, this population developed a distinct natural type. Brazilian breeders selected from the longhair gene carriers within this population to establish the Brazilian Longhair, parallel to the Brazilian Shorthair selection programme.

Standard

The Brazilian Longhair standard describes a moderately foreign-type cat of medium build with a semi-long, flowing coat and moderate undercoat. The head is a moderate wedge; ears are medium-sized; eyes are almond-shaped. All colours and patterns are accepted. The breed standard emphasises a natural, athletic build without extreme features.

WCF Recognition and Brazilian Origin

The Brazilian Longhair (Pelo Longo Brasileiro) is recognized by the WCF and several Brazilian cat associations. The breed was developed from Brazilian domestic shorthair populations that naturally produced semi-long coated individuals. Brazilian cat fanciers selected for the semi-long coat while maintaining the vigorous conformation of the Brazilian domestic cat. The WCF recognition has given the breed international exhibition access.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Brazilian Longhair differ from the Brazilian Shorthair?

Both the Brazilian Longhair and Brazilian Shorthair descend from the same domestic cat population established in Brazil. They differ only in coat length — the longhair carries the recessive longhair gene (l) in homozygous form. Both are natural breeds developed from the same Brazilian domestic cat foundation stock.

Is the Brazilian Longhair the same as any European longhair breed?

No. The Brazilian Longhair is a distinct breed standardized from Brazil's indigenous domestic cat population. It is not related to the European Longhair (WCF-recognized Continental European landrace), the Norwegian Forest Cat, the Siberian, or any other recognized longhaired breed. The breed's foundation is South American, and it represents Brazil's contribution to the international cat fancy.

Is the Brazilian Longhair recognized by CFA or TICA?

CFA and TICA do not currently recognize the Brazilian Longhair (Pelo Longo Brasileiro). The breed is recognized by the WCF and Brazilian national cat associations. International exhibition opportunities are available through WCF-affiliated shows in Europe and elsewhere.
