In short

Pteris cretica is a Mediterranean fern with simple strap-shaped fronds in pinnate arrangement, much sturdier and more forgiving than typical tropical ferns. Many variegated cultivars exist with cream or white-striped fronds. It tolerates ordinary indoor humidity better than maidenhair fern and is one of the easier ferns to keep alive in a normal living room.

Overview

Pteris cretica is widely cultivated outdoors in mild climates and tolerates indoor conditions better than tropical ferns because of its temperate origins. The Albolineata cultivar with cream-striped fronds is the most common indoor form.

Care Priorities

  • Medium to bright filtered light.
  • Cool to moderate temperatures; below 24 °C is the sweet spot.
  • Allow the top of the mix to dry between waterings.
  • Trim spent fronds at the base.

Common Problems

Yellow fronds are overwatering. Crispy edges are dry air or hot rooms. Loss of variegation in low light is reversible by moving to a brighter spot.
