In short

Aglaonema modestum is the original Chinese evergreen, an East Asian forest aroid with broad, plain green leaves and a tolerant constitution that has made it one of the great low-light houseplants. Modern trade is dominated by colourful hybrids — pinks, reds, silvers — but the species itself is still grown for its forgiving habit and clean shape.

Overview

Aglaonema modestum is one of the toughest tropical foliage houseplants and a parent of dozens of modern cultivars. The species has been cultivated in China for centuries for its symbolism of good fortune.

Care Priorities

  • Medium light is the sweet spot; very low light slows growth, very bright light bleaches leaves.
  • Water restraint — modestum tolerates dryness but not waterlogging.
  • Keep above 16 °C; cold draughts cause leaf damage.
  • Wipe leaves regularly to keep them efficient at light capture.

Common Problems

Yellow leaves with mushy bases is overwatering. Brown leaf tips are dry air or hard water. Leaning growth toward the window is normal — rotate the pot every few weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Modestum vs Silver Bay vs Red Siam — same plant?

Modestum is the green species; the colourful trade cultivars are hybrids of modestum, commutatum, and other Aglaonema species. Care is broadly similar.

Will it tolerate office light?

Yes — Aglaonema is one of the most low-light-tolerant houseplant genera. It survives well under fluorescent ceiling lighting.

Why are new leaves smaller than old ones?

Smaller new leaves point to insufficient light, root space, or feed. Check feeding routine and pot size first.
