Munchkin Longhair
Featured photomunchkin-longhair.jpgThe Munchkin Longhair is the semi-longhaired coat-length variety of the Munchkin breed, produced when the shorthair Munchkin is outcrossed to longhaired breeds or when two Munchkins carrying the longhair allele are mated. TICA recognizes the Munchkin Longhair in a separate championship class from the Munchkin Shorthair. Both varieties share the same heterozygous autosomal-dominant mutation (Mkmt) causing short limbs. The semi-long coat is silky, with a plumed tail and a slight but definite neck ruff.

Origin
Both the shorthaired and longhaired Munchkin varieties share the same 1991 Louisiana foundation. The longhair coat is produced by the recessive longhair gene entering the Munchkin gene pool through outcrossing to longhaired domestic cats. TICA treats the two coat lengths as separate championship classes within the Munchkin breed group.
Recognition
TICA accepted the Munchkin for New Breed status in 1994 and Championship status in 2003. Both the shorthair and longhair varieties were included in this recognition, shown as separate classes. No other major international registry (CFA, FIFe, GCCF) currently recognizes the Munchkin Longhair as a championship breed.
Standard
The TICA Munchkin Longhair standard describes a semi-long, all-weather, silky coat that lies smoothly despite the cat's unusually short limbs. The tail is plumed, and a slight neck ruff is present. The body is described as a medium-sized, moderately muscular cat with good bone, showing all the proportional characteristics of the standard Munchkin except coat length. All colours and patterns are accepted.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Munchkin Longhair a different breed from the Munchkin?
In TICA they are recognised as separate championship classes within the same breed group rather than as entirely distinct breeds. Both share the same Mkmt mutation causing short limbs. The longhair variety is shown in its own class at TICA championship events.
Are Munchkin Longhairs prone to spinal problems because of their short legs?
Current veterinary literature does not identify spinal or neurological problems specific to the Munchkin breed. Unlike breeds with achondroplastic skull deformities (Persians, Bulldogs), the Munchkin's short-limb gene does not affect the spine or skull. Standard-length body and normal spine are breed requirements; specimens with spinal abnormalities are disqualified in TICA shows.
Do Munchkin Longhairs have the same lifespan as standard cats?
Current veterinary literature does not identify shortened lifespan specific to the Munchkin breed. The Lm mutation affects limb length but not systemic health or longevity. Standard screening for common feline diseases applies. The average Munchkin lifespan of 12–15 years is comparable to the domestic cat average.
