In short

Hoya carnosa is the classic wax plant — thick succulent leaves on twining stems, with mature plants producing umbels of waxy pink star-shaped flowers that release a strong evening fragrance. It tolerates a wide range of indoor conditions, from window sills to bright shelves, and prefers to be left slightly root-bound. Many cultivars exist, from the dense Hindu Rope to the tricolour krimson queen.

Overview

Hoya carnosa has been in European cultivation since the 1700s and remains the most-grown hoya. Mature plants flower from a permanent stalk called a peduncle — never cut these off, as new flushes emerge from the same spur for years.

Care Priorities

  • Bright filtered light or a few hours of direct morning sun encourages flowering.
  • Water sparingly; hoyas rot fast in soggy mix.
  • Leave peduncles intact — they re-bloom from the same spurs annually.
  • Slight root-binding triggers blooming in mature plants.

Common Problems

Yellow leaves with mushy bases is overwatering. No flowers usually means the plant is too young, in too little light, or has been pruned of its peduncles. Sticky drips beneath flowers are nectar — normal and harmless.

Frequently asked questions

How long until my Hoya carnosa flowers?

Two to four years from a young cutting under decent light. Slight root-binding and a few hours of direct sun trigger first bloom.

Why should I leave the bare flower stalks?

These are peduncles, not spent stems. New flowers emerge from the same spur every year, often multiple times. Cutting them off resets the flowering clock.

Krimson Queen vs Krimson Princess — same plant?

Different cultivars. Krimson Queen has white margins and green centres; Krimson Princess has white centres and green margins.
