In short

Hedera hibernica is the Atlantic European cousin of English ivy, with larger, glossier leaves and a slightly more tolerant indoor temperament. It is widely sold as a houseplant where it overlaps with H. helix in trade, often under the same names. Many of the so-called English ivies in mainstream nurseries are actually Irish ivy.

Overview

Hedera hibernica was historically lumped with H. helix but is now generally accepted as a separate Atlantic European species. Leaf size and ploidy (chromosome count) differ; H. hibernica is tetraploid with larger leaves.

Care Priorities

  • Cooler temperatures than tropical houseplants suit it best.
  • Medium to bright filtered light.
  • Watch for spider mites; the larger leaves still attract them.
  • Pinch back regularly to keep the trailing form tight.

Common Problems

Spider mites are the main pest. Yellow leaves at the soil line are overwatering. Loss of glossy texture is usually old leaves naturally aging.

Frequently asked questions

Hibernica or helix — how do I tell?

Hibernica leaves are usually larger and glossier; helix leaves are slightly smaller with more matte tone. Most mainstream nursery ivy is one or the other, often unlabeled.

Care difference?

Almost none. Both tolerate the same indoor conditions and the same care.

Best display?

Hanging pots or a small trellis. The trailing habit shows off the glossy leaves well.
