Origin
The Boykin Spaniel was developed in the early 20th century in the Wateree River swamp country of South Carolina by L. Whitaker Boykin (1861-1932) of Camden, South Carolina. The foundation dog was a small stray brown spaniel ('Dumpy') found near a Spartanburg church around 1905 by Boykin's hunting friend Alexander L. White, who recognized the dog's hunting aptitude and shipped it to Boykin in Camden. Dumpy was crossed with English Cocker, Springer Spaniel, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, and American Water Spaniel to produce a compact dog suited to the small flat-bottomed 'section boats' used on the Wateree River swamp turkey-and-duck hunts. The Boykin Spaniel was named the official state dog of South Carolina in 1985, the same year the United Kennel Club admitted the breed; the AKC followed in 2009.
Recognition
The American Kennel Club admitted the breed in 2009, the United Kennel Club followed in 1985.
Standard
The AKC and UKC standards describe a medium-sized, sturdy, well-built dog of moderate bone with a refined head and a distinct rectangular outline. The medium-length flat or slightly-wavy outer coat is dense and flat, with feathering on the legs, ears, and tail. Solid liver, solid brown, or solid chocolate is the only acceptable colour — small white markings on the chest and toes are tolerated. The breed stands 36-46 cm at the withers.
