In short

The Neva Masquerade is the colorpoint variety of the Siberian cat, recognized by FIFe as a separate breed and also accepted within the Siberian standard by TICA and WCF. The name refers to the Neva River flowing through Saint Petersburg and to the masquerade mask effect of the colored facial point. First documented in Leningrad/Saint Petersburg in the 1980s, the Neva Masquerade shares the Siberian's semi-long, triple-layered coat, robust frame, and hypoallergenic reputation.

Origin

The Neva Masquerade traces its documented origin to Siberian cat breeding programs in Leningrad (Saint Petersburg) during the 1980s. Colorpoint kittens appeared in litters from foundation Siberian stock kept near the Neva River delta, and breeders in the region began recording and selectively breeding the colorpoint variant from approximately 1988. The first studbook entries for Neva Masquerade in Russia date to the early 1990s. The name combines a reference to the Neva River with 'masquerade,' evoking the masked appearance of the colored facial points. FIFe recognized the Neva Masquerade as a distinct breed in 2011.

Recognition

FIFe (Fédération Internationale Féline) recognized the Neva Masquerade as a breed separate from the Siberian in 2011. TICA accepts colorpoint Siberians within its Siberian breed standard rather than as a separate breed. WCF (World Cat Federation) also recognizes the Neva Masquerade. CFA does not maintain a separate Neva Masquerade registration, registering colorpoint Siberians as Siberians. GCCF registers the Siberian and accepts color-pointed examples within the Siberian standard.

Coat and Appearance

The Neva Masquerade has the full triple-layered Siberian coat: a long, water-repellent outer coat; a dense, oily mid-layer guard coat; and a thick, insulating undercoat. The coat varies seasonally, being much heavier in winter. The colorpoint pattern restricts warm pigment to the face (mask), ears, legs, and tail while the body is pale cream to white. The eyes are always blue, a requirement in all colorpoint cats. The head is large and slightly wedge-shaped with a rounded contour; ears are large; the body is large and muscular. Neva Masquerades are often cited alongside Siberians for a reportedly reduced allergen profile.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Neva Masquerade the same as the Siberian?

The Neva Masquerade is genetically a Siberian cat carrying the colorpoint gene. FIFe registers them as separate breeds; TICA and WCF include them within the Siberian standard as a color variant. In appearance and physical structure they are identical; the only difference is the pointed coat pattern and the blue eyes that accompany it.

What does Neva Masquerade mean?

Neva refers to the Neva River that flows through Saint Petersburg, Russia, where the breed first appeared in documented breeding records during the 1980s. Masquerade refers to the mask-like appearance of the dark facial point: the dark coloring covers the face like a masquerade mask while the body remains pale. The name captures both the geographical origin and the distinctive colorpoint appearance.

When did FIFe recognize the Neva Masquerade as a separate breed?

FIFe recognized the Neva Masquerade as a distinct breed in 2011, after the Russian breeding community had maintained separate studbooks for colorpoint Siberians for approximately two decades. TICA, which recognized the Siberian in 1992, continued to include colorpoint Siberians within the Siberian standard rather than creating a separate Neva Masquerade category.
