The Macallan Distillery
Speyside distillery founded 1824 — defined by exclusive sherry cask maturation since the 19th century.

The Macallan Distillery, founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid on the Easter Elchies estate near Craigellachie, Speyside, is one of the most commercially significant single malt distilleries globally. The distillery's defining characteristic is its commitment to sherry-seasoned European oak maturation — Macallan operates one of the world's largest investments in custom-coopered European oak casks seasoned with oloroso sherry in Jerez before being shipped to Scotland. The brand is owned by Edrington. A new £140 million distillery, designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners and partially buried beneath the landscape, opened in 2018.

The Sherry Cask Programme
Macallan's commercial identity is built around exclusive maturation in sherry-seasoned European oak casks. The distillery commissions custom oak casks (predominantly from Galicia, Spain) coopered to its specifications and seasoned with oloroso sherry in Jerez for 18 months to two years before being filled with Macallan new make. The programme is one of the largest private cask operations in the wider sherry industry.
2018 Distillery
The £140 million distillery designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners and built into a hillside on the Easter Elchies estate opened in 2018. The grass-roofed structure is partially buried beneath the landscape and contains 36 copper pot stills arrayed around a central core. The architectural ambition reflects the brand's positioning at the premium end of single malt.
