Kalanchoe tomentosa
Kalanchoe tomentosa (Panda Plant) Care Guide
Featured photokalanchoe-tomentosa.jpgKalanchoe tomentosa is the panda plant, a Madagascan succulent with thick, fuzzy, silver-green leaves edged with chocolate-brown spots — the texture is exactly like soft fur. It is one of the most tactile succulents and one of the easier kalanchoes for indoor growing. The fuzzy leaves require slightly different watering technique than smooth-leaved succulents.

Overview
Kalanchoe tomentosa was described in the 1860s and is one of the most distinctive kalanchoes because of its fur-like leaf surface. The Chocolate Soldier cultivar has even darker brown leaf edges.
Care Priorities
- Full sun or very bright filtered light.
- Water at the soil only; the fuzzy leaves trap and rot from leaf moisture.
- Free-draining mix.
- Allow to fully dry between waterings.
Common Problems
Mushy leaves are overwatering. Pale leaves with no brown edges are too little light. Mould on fuzzy leaves is from overhead watering.

Frequently asked questions
Why are the leaves fuzzy?
The dense felt of fine hairs is species-typical and provides protection against UV and water loss in dry Madagascan habitats.
Is the toxicity serious?
Kalanchoes contain cardiac glycosides — toxic to pets in larger doses. Keep out of reach of cats and dogs.
Can I wipe the leaves?
Avoid it — the felt is delicate and damaged by rubbing. Use a soft brush to clear dust if needed.
